Toyota Innova is a car which redefined reliability, it's a car in which a lot of us has traveled atleast once.

 How and where it was first launched


Toyota Innova was first launched by Toyota Astra motors in 2004 in Indonesia named as the Toyota Kijang Innova, which replaced the orignal Kijang. The Kijang in India was known as Qualis. The qualis was named differently in different countries. Toyota Innova was first launched in India on 24 february 2005 in India.



The Innova was available with 2 engine on offer, the first was a 2.5 litre D-4D diesel engine producing 103 ps of power and a 2.0 litre VVT-I petrol engine producing 136 PS of power. In India Toyota Innova was available only with a 5 speed manual transmission but in international markets it was also available with a 4 speed automatic transmission in 2005.




 The Innova has always been a body on frame chassis unit based on the IMV platform same as the old Toyota Fortuner.

Toyota Innova code named as AN-40 was launched at an ex showroom starting price of 6.74 lakh and 7.34 lakh for the diesel.


Toyota Innova in 2005 came with some features like manual air conditioning, a basic audio system, ABS and Airbags for the top spec variants.

First update in 2009


  The first update Innova received was in 2009 which came with  revised bumpers, headlamps and tail lamps. 


 

     The Innova 2009 came with some creature comfort features like automatic climate control air conditioning and steering mounted audio controls.


Most importantly it was BS-4 complied and also got an intercooler.
 
Innova CNG


Toyota launched Innova CNG in 2009 and back in the day, the Innova CNG was BS-3 complied.
 
Toyota Innova Crysta edition in 2011


The Innova Crysta edition is the same name from the second generation Innova. The Crysta edition was based on the VX  variant and came with new alloys, muffler tip and some body graphics. 

It also came with leather seat covers and a wooden panel on the centerel console.

Second update in 2012

The 2012 Innova came with revised bumpers and tail lamps, new headlamps, new alloys.

It also got a new steering wheel.


New Z variant in 2012


Toyota launched the new top of the line Z variant placed above the VX variant.


Innova chrome edition in 2013


In 2013 Innova completed close to 4 lakh sales in India, to celebrate this Toyota launched the Innova chrome edition with some minor chrome editions.


Update in 2013


The 2013 Innova now got bigger grill, slightly redesigned bumpers.

The Innova also got a touchscreen system with rear camera, leather wrapped steering with wooden inserts on the top. Toyota did a wise update by giving 2 airbgs as standard across all the variants.

Toyota Innova recall in 2014


Toyota recalled 45,000 units of the car because of a spiral cable installed in the steering wheel which led to continues illumination of airbag light in the instument cluster.


Toyota Innova 10th anniversary


In 2015 Innova completed 10 years in India with some facelifts and updates, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Innova, Toyota launched the Innova anniversary edition with crhrome editions on headlamps and tail lamps, a new touchscreen system and some body graphics.

Toyota Innova 2nd generation showcase in Auto Expo 2016

The Innova 2nd generation was named as Toyota Innova Crysta in the Auto Expo 2016. The Innova Crysta was code named as AN-140, it drew a lot of attention to the viewers.

Toyota Innova Crysta


The Innova Crysta was priced from 13.84 lakh to 20.74 lakhs.


The Innova Crysta was priced much higher than it's predecessor, but it offered so much more, the Innova Crysta is based on the new global architecture platform and shared only 5% components from the old Innova.
 

The 2nd generation Innova (Innova Crysta) was far more luxurious than the old Innova and offered features which were never heard in the old Innova.


The Innova Crysta now had 7 airbags.

Innova Crysta engines in 2016


The Innova Crysta initially was launched with 2 engines on offer.
(1) 2.4 litre diesel engine producing 150 PS of power and 343 NM of tourque.
(2) 2.8 litre diesel engine producing 174 PS of power and 360 NM of torque.
This time Innova Crysta was also available with an automatic transmission.


It also started getting driving modes like eco and power.

Toyota Innova Crysta ride quality issue
Initially a lot of costumers complained about the bumpy ride quality.


Toyota reduced the wheel size from 16 inch to 17 inch, as the result, the ride became less bumpy and the tyres were less prone to punctures.

Innova Crysta petrol


 Toyota launched the Innova with a petrol engine producing 166 PS of power and 245 NM of torque later in 2016. The Innova Crysta petrol was also available with an automatic transmission.

Toyota Innova Touring Sport


The Toyota Innova Touring Sport was launched in april 2016. Innova Touring Sport was done with many cosmetic changes which made the Innova quiet impressive, The Touring Sport found a good number of takers.


The Innova Touring Sport got all black interiors and red wood inserts in the too.


The Toyota Innova Touring Sport was only avalable with a 2.4 litre disel engine with manual transmission and a 2.7 litre petrol engine mated with an automatic transmission.

New 6 speed manual transmission in 2017


The Innova got a new 6 speed manual transmission replacing the old 5 speed manual transmission for the 2.4 litre diesel engine.

Toyota Innova petrol recall in 2018


In july 2018, Toyota recalled the petrol engine of the Innova as there was a faulty wiring harness, the fuel return hose was wrongly connected to the canaster hose, which resulted to fuel leckage when the fuel tank was full. This issue was rectified for free.

Innova Crysta new G+ variant
The Innova got a new G+ variant in march 2019, this variant was slotted between the G and G+ variant, and was 38 thousand rupees cheaper than the GX variant. However, it lost on a few features like an audio system, centre rear arm rest and rear d-fogger. The G+ variant was avalable with both 7 and 8 seater options and was only available with a 2.4 litre diesel engine with 6 speed manual transmission

Innova update in 2019


In april 2019, Toyota updated the Innova with USB fast charging, ivory coloured upholstery, perforated leather seats, heat rejection glasses. However these updates were available only for the diesel variants nothing for the petrol.


The USB fast charging and heat rejection glasses were also added to the Innova Touring Sport.

Bs-6 update


Now sadly Toyota had to discontinue the 2.8 litre diesel engine because of the BS-6 norms, the 2.4 litre engine was now more refined and was updated with BS-6 norms. The 2.7 litre petrol engine was also updated with BS-6 norms.

Toyota Innova increased prices


The prices of the Innova were increased by 1.2 lakhs, now the Innova 2.4 automatic costed the same as the previous 2.8 automatic. 

Toyota Innova 15th anniversary


To celebrate th 15th anniversary of the Innova in India, Toyota launched the Innova leadership edition based on the VX variant. Ya, the Innova Crysta Leadership edition was quiet similar to the Innova Touring Sport in terms of looks but it got some new features like 360 degree camera and electrically foldable ORVM's. The Innova Crysta Leadership Edition was 62 thousand rupees expensive than the regular VX variant. 

Toyota Innova 2021 facelift


The Toyota Innova got another facelift in 2021. The 2021 Innova came with new alloys, new bumpres, revised grill.


 The Innova Crysta 2021 got some new features like front parking sensors, a new touchscreen system. In terms of pricing Innova 2021 Innova are 60-70 thousand expensive and 20-70 thousand in diesel.

Toyota Innova verdict


Toyota Innova's biggest success reason is it's
reliability and toyota's haste free service experience. I have seen Innova's from first badge completing 6 to lakh km's but still running good.
