Ford EcoSport VS Tata Nexon comparison after long tearm and short term

Tata Nexon VS Ford EcoSport

Safety and build quality

In terms of safety Tata Nexon has scored full 5 star crash test rating in Global NCAP wheres Ford claims that the EcoSport will easily bring 5 star crash test rating in Global NCAP but we still cannot say anything but in real life EcoSport has done a great job by keeping the cabin intact at worst of the accidents.

In terms of active safety Nexon has a clear advantage by having ESP, traction control and hill hold which is not present in the EcoSport till it's Titanium variants. ABS, EBD, seat belts, seat belt reminder and speed sensering dorr lock as standard active safety features in both of the cars. In terms of passive safety EcoSport and Nexon till the trend variant has the same amount of safety features like 2 airbags, seat belt pretensioners, seat belt load limiter, impact sensering auto door lock. But when it comes to EcoSport Titanium+ and above EcoSport also starts getting ESP, hill hold, traction control and 6 airbags as passive safety which is not present in Nexon's any variant!

When it comes to build quality EcoSport has better plastic quality and fit and finish quality wheres Nexon could be seen with some cost cuttings at some places and specially hidden compartments wheres EcoSport's touch and feel feels more solid, high quality and premium, Nexon has a lot of panel gaps too. Talking about interior premium feel EcoSport feels quite simple and still premium and on the other hand Nexon's interior has more aesthetics but is not as high quality as the Ford EcoSport.

In terms of exterior build both cars are solid but EcoSport sill has a slight edge. An average adult if climbs on the roof Nexon's roof starts depressing but EcoSport feels still more solid!

Ride and Handling

Talking about ride quality Nexon is on a little softer side by a very less margin and helps to improve the ride quality little bit but while cornering hard EcoSport never feels like a SUV in that sense and both car maintains their line beautifully but EcoSport is little bit better, at higher speeds both the cars feel solid but EcoSport is better by a very small margin, both the cars are amazing and neck to neck in terms of steering feedback and accuracy and breaking performance is good in both cars and here also they are neck to neck.

Engine performance, NVH levels and fuel efficiency

Talking first about petrol engines Nexon gets a 1.2 litre turbo charged 3 cylinder Revotron engine producing 120 PS of power @ 5500 RPM and 170 NM of torque @ 1750-4000 RPM mated with a 6 speed manual and 6 speed AMT type automatic transmission.

Ford EcoSport gets a 1.5 litre naturally aspirated 3 cylinder dragon series TI-VCT  engine producing 123 PS of power @ 6500 RPM and 149 NM of torque @ 4500 RPM mated with a 5 speed manual and a 6 speed torque converter type automatic transmission with paddle sifters.

Talking about Tata Nexon's petrol engine it starts with laziness below 1750 RPM that is really a problem while climbing slopes you really have to do a lot of efforts but as it touches 1750 RPM it starts pulling decently and linearly till 4000 RPM than it starts to loose it's breath well this engine has some flatspots that sometimes really irritate and the reason to all this is that the fueling of the engine is very badly done. But for non enthusiast the engine is good with linear and decent mid range punch and talking about the AMT it is not smooth and fast with shifts and is jerky. Talking about the NVH levels, Nexon is refine  at low end and ok at idle at mid range it starts making some noise and at higher end it sounds quite loud! Road, wind and outside noise is decently insulated overall in terms of NVH this engine is ok.

Now it is the time for the EcoSport petrol! Well it impresses with a nice punch at every RPM! This has no lag which will help you in the daily traffic and hilly areas, talking the mid range it still has a very good amount of grunt which will help you while overtaking and the best thing is that this engine has a very good performance at even higher RPM's! Talking about the 6 speed torque converter it is smooth and fast with shifts with added comfort and driving pleasure of the paddle shifters this is clearly one of the best petrol automatics in India! Talking about the NVH levels at idle you can feel the very little amount of 3 cylinder nature if you try to observe it but as you get going it's smooth and refine with very very minor vibrations, road, wind and outside noise is very well insulated and in that sense it feels premium!

Now it's time for the diesels

Tata Nexon gets a 1.5 litre litre 4 cylinder Revotorq engine producing 110 PS of power @ 4000 RPM and 260 NM of torque @ 1500-2750 RPM mated with a 6 speed manual and a 6 speed AMT type automatic transmission.

On the other hand, EcoSport gets the 1.5 litre TDCI diesel engine producing 100 PS of power @ 3750 RPM and 215 NM of torque @ 1750-2500 RPM mated with only a 5 speed manual transmission.

Well on the road Nexon feels punchy especially after 1500 RPM there is a kick which really feels rewarding and below 1500 RPM there is no lag but no kick at all but after 4000 RPM it becomes out of breath but still you have enough band to play with! Overtakes are effortless and easy with really impressive in gear acceleration! Overall it also suitable for an enthusiast! The AMT Nexon diesel is better than petrol but still is behind it's competition, it's little jerky and ok with shifts but for a non enthusiast it's fine! You can feel a bit of dieselness from this engine at low speeds but as speed climbs it starts becoming smoother and smoother till the mid range but at high RPM's it becomes really boomy! Road, wind and outside noise is decently insulated overall in terms of NVH this engine is ok.

Now talking about the EcoSport, the engine is quite rev happy, which is not very diesel like! But it does not feel that strong on paper but in real life it's good and linear and has a little bit of high end, that's surprising for a diesel! EcoSport does a fair job in terms of in gear acceleration with power available every time you need it, overall it's fun! This 1.5 diesel is quiet smooth at get go till the mid range but after 4000 RPM it also starts making some noise. Road, wind and outside noise is very well insulated and in that sense it feels premium!

Comfort and space

Both the Nexon and EcoSport has enough space for 5 average size adults but Nexon having slight advantage in terms of cabin space as it has little more leg room, and shoulder room, headroom is similar in both the cars. Comfort wise front seats of both the cars are equally comfortable but at rear seat Nexon still has a slight advantage with better under thigh support! In terms of boot space, Nexon has a 350 litres of boot space wheres EcoSport gets a 341 litres of boot space but in real life both cars have enough to carry 5 people's luggage with ease!

After sales service and maintenance cost

Tata has improved a lot from the past and Ford also but still Tata is still behind Ford, the technicians are better trained in Ford's service centers and has way more transpiracy so you can check the annual service cost and select the parts you want to change and you will get the exact bill on your mobile phone and they are not going to charge 1 extra penny in the service of the car! Talking about Tata they do not have a good control at their dealerships, ya but not every service center has the same situation!
Talking about the maintenance cost Ford's were badly known for their high sphere parts, annual service cost! But time has changed, after the launch of EcoSport the maintenance cost is the cheapest in the segment! The estimated service cost of the EcoSport is 18,440 rupees after 5 years, wheres Tata's maintenance cost is always been nor too high nor to low it's nominal, the sphere parts of the Nexon are reasonable but not as cheap as the EcoSport. The average maintenance cost of the Nexon is 37,050 rupees after 5 years.

Features

In terms of features both the cars are feature loaded with all the basic features which you need! Talking about the extra features you get in the Nexon XZ+ (O) gets over the EcoSport S are rear A/C vents which are not of that use because EcoSport's A/C is still faster to cool, EcoSport also have a rear camera but Nexon has added dynamic guidelines, LED tail lamps, 2 cabin lamps EcoSport gets only 1, driver vanity mirrors light, cornering lamps, digital instrument cluster, AUX comparability and EcoSport S gets an auto dimming IRVM, telescopic adjustable steering wheel wheres Nexon gets only tilt, ambient lighting and xenon projector lamps wheres Nexon gets
a halogen projector lamps. Overall both the cars are fairly feature loaded!

Looks

EcoSport as you know was launched in 2013, still in 2021 it had only a facelift, no new generation but still it looks sexy till now with beautiful shape! With it's blacked out finish in the headlamps from the SE variant makes it look even sportier and it is timeless! Now talking about the Nexon, it got a major facelift in 2020 and that made it looking sharper with more raised bonnet and better rear end it makes it looking mature and fresh!

Resale value

After using your car when it's time to sell your car you expect a good resale value! Both the cars have almost equally good resale value and will not disappoint you.

Both cars after 5 years of use

After 5 years of usage if you bring both the cars together you will feel that both the cars would be in good condition in terms of electronics and engines but talking about the part where EcoSport overtakes the Nexon is the sturdy build quality in the interiors! You will feel that the panel gaps are more uniform in the EcoSport and the Nexon could start rattling but the EcoSport's high quality will improve your experience and the big concern would be the after sales service! You can face difficulty with the less trained dealership of Tata depending upon the area will surely enhance your experience. Talking about the maintenance cost you will save almost 18,600 rupees more on the Nexon which is double than the EcoSport and we believe that the sphere parts would cost almost same. In terms of fuel prices we will first compare the Nexon petrol and the EcoSport petrol EcoSport gives 1 kmpl less fuel efficiency, we are going to compare with the average yearly running of 10,000 km's and according to fuel prices in Delhi on 8 June 2021 you will save 20,956 rupees on the EcoSport. The resale value of both the cars would be similar. Than comparing Nexon diesel with the EcoSport diesel you will save the same 20,956 rupees in the Nexon. Now, comparing the EcoSport diesel with the Nexon petrol you will save 89,580 rupees in the EcoSport diesel!

Verdict

If you want 15% safer car than Nexon is for you but do not under estimate the EcoSport it is also very safe! If you want a petrol manual car than EcoSport petrol is a better choice it justifies it's little price hike with Ford's better peace of mind service, high quality interiors which will last longer and most importantly better petrol engine with better low end grunt which will be easier to drive in city and hilly areas. Talking about petrol automatics, if you have a bujet of 11 to 12 lakhs than EcoSport is far better and if you do not have this bujet than Nexon is the only option if you want only one car from these two. Talking about diesel manual's Nexon if you want some more kick in the mid range and can compromise a little bit on low end and could compromise on bit of interior quality and after sales service and want little more space than Nexon if for you! If you want linear performance with high quality and better after sales service than EcoSport is the pick for you! Note: If you are planning for Nexon petrol manual than EcoSport diesel is a better deal as the BS-6 diesel engines do not pollute much and the advantages of a diesel are as following- Easier to pick with clutch, climb small uphill's with clutch no need of accelerator, easier to pick with 2nd gear and can cross speedbreakers on 3rd gear itself! You will save 89,580 rupees on fuel and get almost 1 lakh better resale value! The Nexon petrol XZ+(O) dual tone costs 11.03 lakh wheres the EcoSport SE diesel costs 11.19 lakh rupees which is 16 thousand rupees extra! So we are going to subtract 16 thousand from 1,86,000 which is the extra savings from EcoSport diesel in long term and the result is 1,70,000 rupees so subtract it by Nexon's price. So the result is 9,33,000 so you can even upgrade to the S diesel which costs 11.70 lakh so the cost after long term would be 10,00,000 lakh so you save a lot of money! So, if you do not care about long term costing than also you should purchase the EcoSport SE would be better paying 16 thousand rupees and getting better engine with more fuel economy, interior quality and better after sales service these things justify's almost 1 lakh more which is way more than 16 thousand rupees! Same with any variant of Nexon petrol manual.
